Harpeth Hall was founded on the bold idea that girls deserve an excellent education filled with possibilities and purpose. The school traces its history back to Ward Seminary — a school for young women that opened in Nashville in 1865. At that time, few institutions in the country existed to prepare women for college, making Ward Seminary a pacesetter as Nashville built its reputation as the Athens of the South. From Ward Seminary to Ward-Belmont to today, Harpeth Hall educates girls and young women in fifth through 12th grades to “think critically, lead confidently, and live honorably.”

With an established history and longstanding reputation as one of the premier girls schools regionally and nationally, Harpeth Hall distinguishes itself through the confidence and leadership it instills in girls and young women. Our faculty knows how girls learn best, and we approach every opportunity for learning and growth with intentionality. Harpeth Hall’s premier programs — including our three-week Winterim for upper school students — set our education experience apart. Inside and outside our classrooms, our girls pursue immersive experiences that stretch their learning and develop new skills and interests. Through it all, our knowledgeable and attentive college counselors guide and encourage students in future pursuits, while our Center for Civic Engagement supports the girls in becoming engaged citizens and responsible leaders who make meaningful contributions to their communities.
